Sen. Blouin Applauds PacifiCorp’s Commitment to
Halting Coal-Fired Units in Utah
SALT LAKE CITY – Today, PacifiCorp filed their preliminary 2023 Integrated Resource Plan (IRP), which includes their commitment to closing two coal-fired power plants in the state of Utah. Sen. Blouin releases the following statement in support of this initiative:
“The expedited closures of Utah’s coal plants mark the beginning of a new era of opportunity for our state. I applaud PacifiCorp’s commitment to a thoughtful, market-driven planning process and look forward to continuously working with the utility to ensure that any resources replacing the Hunter and Huntington plants fulfill the utility’s least-cost, least-risk mission. It is incumbent on us as policymakers to identify new opportunities that will allow Utah’s energy communities to continue to prosper as we move into a new era.”
“Following a legislative session where Republicans spent millions of dollars fighting federal regulations and attacked ESG investing, it’s vindicating to see market forces determining a better alternative for Utah’s energy system. Despite GOP-led attempts to skirt around Utah’s “any of the above” energy policy, we should embrace our plentiful renewable resources, including solar, geothermal, and wind, and build a diverse grid that’s anchored by innovative projects like the planned hydrogen hub in Delta and others developed by Utah companies with Utah workers. This new way forward will strengthen Utah’s environment and our economy.”
Integrated Resource Plans are blueprints that consider a variety of energy supply and demand elements, including forecasting and strategizing to meet specific energy goals. You can read more about PacifiCorp’s IRP here.
