Senator Luz Escamilla | Minority Leader
Serving Utah Senate District 10
(West Side of Salt Lake City, West Valley City, and Magna)
Senator Luz Escamilla, elected to the Utah State Senate on November 4, 2008, made history as the first Latina and immigrant to serve in the Utah State Legislature. Currently in her fourth term as Minority Leader, she focuses on driving impactful legislative initiatives that enhance the well-being of Utah’s families. Her advocacy addresses social determinants of health, emphasizing healthcare access, food security, air quality, and high-quality childcare.
Senator Escamilla holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Marketing and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Utah. With extensive experience as a business and political consultant, she previously directed the State Office of Ethnic Affairs and held various roles at Zion's Bank. Currently, she co-manages ESCATEC Solutions, which improves technology support for diverse organizations. Luz resides in Salt Lake City with her husband, Juan Carlos, and their children.
LEGISLATIVE PRIORITIES
Senator Escamilla believes that Utah families and children deserve the opportunity to succeed at every step of the way. She has often found herself asking the question: What is Utah’s commitment to investing in our children and their families? Her comprehensive and holistic approach begins long before a child is born and continues through every stage of life. It starts with prenatal care that supports mothers and ensures the health of their babies, including access to home visiting programs to educate and empower parents. It means providing affordable, high-quality childcare so parents can balance work and family without having to sacrifice one for the other. I’ve also fought to ensure every child has access to nutritious food, high-quality education, essential healthcare services—including mental and behavioral health support—and clean air. Currently, Senator Escamilla's number one priority is child care.
